Why Dad Needs to Be in the Picture
As a family photographer in New York City, I spend a lot of time watching families interact before I ever lift my camera.
One thing I've noticed is that today's dads are incredibly involved.
They're carrying toddlers on their shoulders through Central Park, pushing scooters down Riverside Drive, making silly faces to get a genuine laugh, and somehow managing to carry the diaper bag, snacks, and an extra sweatshirt all at the same time.
They're present.
One of my favorite parts of a session is watching a child instinctively reach for Dad's hand. No one tells them to do it. They just do. It's where they feel safe.
Those are the moments I love to photograph.
Not because they're perfectly posed, but because they're real.
Years from now, your children won't remember exactly what they wore for family photos. They won't notice whether your shirt was wrinkled or whether your hair was cooperating.
They'll notice you.
They'll see the way you looked at them.
The way you held them.
The way you made them laugh.
As parents, we often spend so much time documenting our children's lives that we forget to be part of the story ourselves.
One day, these photographs won't just be pictures—they'll become part of your family's history.
They'll remind your children what it felt like to be little. What it felt like to fit on your shoulders. What it felt like to wrap their hand around yours.
That's why I always encourage dads to jump into the frame, even if the original plan was "just a few of Mom and the kids."
Because someday, those images may become the ones your children treasure most.
Family photography isn't about creating perfect portraits.
It's about preserving relationships.
It's about capturing this season of life before it quietly becomes the next one.
And dads are a huge part of that story.
So the next time you're planning family photos, don't think of them as something you're doing for today.
Think of them as a gift you're leaving for your children years from now.
One they'll be incredibly grateful to have.
HAPPY FATHERS DAY EVERYONE!
