The Best NYC Parks for Family Photos—Beyond Central Park
When people think about family photos in New York City, Central Park is usually the first place that comes to mind. And for good reason—it's beautiful.
But after photographing families all over Manhattan, I've found that some of my favorite sessions happen in parks that don't get nearly as much attention.
If you're looking for a location that feels a little quieter, more personal, or simply different, here are a few of my favorite places.
Riverside Park
As an Upper West Side family photographer, I find myself returning to Riverside Park again and again.
There are tree-lined paths, gardens, wide lawns, beautiful stone staircases, and views of the Hudson River that change with every season. Children have room to run, parents can relax, and there are countless little corners that feel private even on busy weekends.
It's especially beautiful in the evening when the sun begins to drop over the river.
Carl Schurz Park
Tucked away on the Upper East Side, Carl Schurz Park is one of Manhattan's hidden gems.
You'll find winding pathways, waterfront overlooks, flowering gardens, and plenty of room for children to explore. It feels intimate without feeling small, making it perfect for families who want beautiful scenery without the crowds.
Fort Tryon Park
If you're looking for something that feels almost European, Fort Tryon Park is hard to beat.
Stone walkways, dramatic overlooks, lush gardens, and sweeping views of the Hudson create a timeless backdrop. Every season offers something different, from spring blooms to vibrant autumn colors.
Battery Park
For families who love the downtown skyline, Battery Park offers something completely different.
You'll find waterfront views, gardens, ferries passing in the distance, and lower Manhattan architecture all within walking distance. It's ideal if you want your photos to feel unmistakably New York.
Brooklyn Bridge Park
Although it's across the river, Brooklyn Bridge Park is worth considering.
The skyline views are iconic, the piers offer plenty of open space for kids to play, and the combination of water, bridges, and city architecture creates photographs that feel both modern and timeless.
Little Island
One of New York City's newest parks has quickly become a favorite.
Little Island features winding paths, native plants, unique architecture, and unexpected views around every corner. It works especially well for families who want something contemporary and full of texture.
Don't Forget Your Own Neighborhood
Some of my favorite family sessions don't happen in famous parks at all.
Sometimes we begin on your front stoop, stop at your neighborhood playground, visit the local coffee shop, or walk the streets where your family spends every weekend.
Years from now, those places often mean more than any famous landmark.
The best family photos aren't just about beautiful scenery—they're about remembering your life exactly as it is today.
Choosing the Right Location
The perfect location depends on your family.
If your children love to run, we'll choose somewhere with open space.
If you'd rather have a quieter session, I'll recommend a less crowded park.
If your family has a favorite neighborhood, we can build the session around the places that already hold your memories.
The location is simply the backdrop. The connection between your family is what people remember.
If you're planning family photos in New York City and aren't sure where to go, I'm always happy to recommend a location that fits your family's personality—not just the most popular spot.
