Most families automatically think of fall when they think about booking family photos.
And while fall in New York is beautiful, it's also the busiest season for family photographers. Parks are crowded, schedules fill quickly, and everyone seems to be racing against the holiday card deadline.
Summer, on the other hand, might be New York City's best-kept secret.
The Light Lasts Longer
One of my favorite things about photographing families in June, July, and August is the evening light.
With sunsets happening much later, we can schedule sessions after dinner when temperatures are cooler and children are often in a better mood. The golden light filtering through the trees in Central Park or along Riverside Park creates a beautiful, relaxed atmosphere that feels distinctly New York.
Kids Are Less Stressed
During the school year, families are juggling homework, activities, sports, and packed schedules.
In summer, the pace changes.
Kids tend to be more relaxed, parents aren't rushing from one activity to another, and everyone arrives at a session with a little more breathing room. That often leads to more genuine smiles and natural moments.
New York Feels More Playful
Summer in New York has its own personality.
Families spend more time outdoors, dogs come along on adventures, and neighborhoods feel alive. Whether we're walking through the Upper West Side, exploring Riverside Park, or spending time in Central Park, there's an energy that photographs beautifully.
You Don't Have to Worry About Holiday Cards Yet
One of the biggest advantages of summer sessions is timing.
You'll have your photos long before the holiday rush. That means plenty of time to choose favorites, create albums, update frames around your home, and yes—design holiday cards months before everyone else starts thinking about them.
