The Photo Your Children Will Treasure Most Isn't the Perfect One
When most parents book a family photo session, they have one goal in mind.
"I just hope we get one good picture where everyone is smiling at the camera."
And we absolutely will.
But after photographing hundreds of families, I've learned something surprising.
The photograph your children treasure most years from now probably won't be that perfectly posed portrait.
It will be something much quieter.
The Moments You Don't Plan
It might be the way your daughter reached for your hand without thinking.
The way your son wrapped both arms around your neck because he wasn't quite ready to let go.
The way everyone burst into laughter after the dog decided to ignore every command.
Those are the moments no one can script.
They're also the moments that tell the truth.
Childhood Isn't Perfect
Children are wonderfully unpredictable.
They get distracted.
They make funny faces.
They collect sticks, chase pigeons, twirl in circles, and ask a hundred questions.
As a photographer, I don't see those things as interruptions.
I see them as childhood.
If every image is perfectly posed, you lose the little quirks that make your family uniquely yours.
The Little Things Fade First
Years from now, you'll remember the big milestones.
You'll remember birthdays, graduations, vacations, and holidays.
But it's the everyday details that quietly disappear.
The gap-toothed smile.
The curls that refused to stay brushed.
The tiny hand that still fit inside yours.
The way your child looked up at you with complete trust.
Those are the details photographs protect.
My Favorite Images Usually Happen Between the Poses
Some of my favorite photographs have happened after I said, "Okay, we're done."
Parents relax.
Children stop trying to "perform."
Someone tells a joke.
A little one leans against Mom's shoulder.
Dad starts laughing.
Suddenly, everyone forgets there's a camera.
That's often when the magic happens.
One Day, These Photos Will Mean Something Different
Right now, you're creating photographs for yourself.
But one day, they'll belong to your children.
They'll look at them after they've grown up.
They'll notice how young you looked.
How you held them.
How safe they felt.
They won't be counting perfectly placed hands or perfectly coordinated outfits.
They'll be looking for something much more important.
Love.
That's Why I Photograph the Way I Do
Of course we'll create beautiful portraits for your walls.
But I also leave room for the in-between moments.
The giggles.
The hugs.
The wind-blown hair.
The spontaneous dance party.
The quiet glance between parents.
Because those are the photographs that grow more valuable every single year.
Perfection is beautiful.
Connection is unforgettable.
And someday, I believe that's the photograph your children will treasure most.
