What Happens If It Rains or Snows on Your NYC Family Photo Session?

One of the questions I get asked most often is:

"What if it rains?"

Or, in New York...

"What if it snows?"

The short answer is: Don't panic.

Weather is part of life, and after years of photographing families throughout New York City, I've learned that some of the most beautiful sessions happen on days that didn't go exactly as planned.

First, We Watch the Forecast Together

I start keeping an eye on the weather several days before your session.

Forecasts can change dramatically in the days leading up to your session, so I don't make decisions too early. A prediction of rain five days out may disappear completely by the day of your session.

We'll stay in touch and decide together if the forecast becomes questionable.

Not Every Forecast Calls for a Reschedule

Cloudy skies?

Those can actually be wonderful for photography. Soft clouds create beautiful, even light that is flattering for skin tones and makes colors look rich and natural.

A small chance of rain?

We may still move forward if it looks like the weather will pass quickly.

Heavy rain, thunderstorms, or strong winds?

That's when we'll look at our options.

Rain Doesn't Always Mean We Have to Cancel

If the weather doesn't cooperate, we have choices.

If you're comfortable with it, we can photograph your session in your home. Some of the most meaningful family photographs happen right where life unfolds—reading books on the couch, making pancakes in the kitchen, building forts in the living room, playing with the family dog, or simply snuggling together. These everyday moments often become the photographs families treasure most.

If the rain is expected to clear, we may begin indoors and head outside once the weather passes.

If it's a true washout with no break in sight, we'll simply reschedule. My goal is never to force a session in poor weather. It's to create photographs you'll love for years to come.

What About Snow?

Snow sessions can be absolutely magical.

Fresh snow transforms familiar parks into something quiet, peaceful, and timeless. Children often forget they're having their pictures taken because they're too busy catching snowflakes, making footprints, building tiny snowmen, or laughing together.

Some of my favorite winter photographs have happened during gentle snowfall.

If the weather is safe and everyone is comfortable, snow can create unforgettable images that simply aren't possible any other time of year.

Trust the Process

One thing I always remind families is this:

The weather is only one part of your session.

The people are what matter most.

Whether we're photographing your family in Central Park, your favorite neighborhood, or the comfort of your own home while rain falls outside, my focus is always on capturing your family's connection.

Years from now, you won't remember what the weather forecast said.

You'll remember how this season of your life felt.

And that's exactly what I hope your photographs preserve.

If you're planning a family photo session in New York City and have questions about the weather, don't worry—you won't have to make the decision alone. I'll guide you every step of the way so you can relax and enjoy the experience, rain, shine, or snow.
