Family Photos with Dogs in New York City: Everything You Need to Know

If your dog is part of your family, they belong in your family photos.

As a New York City family photographer, I've learned that dogs often become the heart of a session. They bring energy, personality, and a little unpredictability—which usually leads to some of the most memorable photographs.

Whether your dog is a perfectly trained companion or a lovable chaos machine, including them in your family photos can create images you'll treasure for years.

Should We Bring Our Dog to Family Photos?

In most cases, yes.

Many families tell me they're worried their dog won't cooperate.

The truth is that dogs don't need to sit perfectly or look at the camera the entire time.

Some of my favorite photographs happen when dogs are simply being themselves:

  • Walking beside their family

  • Looking up at their favorite person

  • Running through the park

  • Snuggling with children

  • Exploring their surroundings

Those moments often feel more authentic than a posed portrait.

Best Places for Family Photos with Dogs in NYC

Central Park

Central Park offers endless variety for families and pets.

Wide paths, open lawns, wooded areas, bridges, and iconic New York scenery make it one of the most versatile locations for family photography.

Riverside Park

For Upper West Side families, Riverside Park is one of my favorite locations.

The river views, tree-lined paths, and quieter atmosphere often work well for dogs who become overstimulated in crowded areas.

Your Neighborhood

Some of the most meaningful sessions happen close to home.

The block where you walk your dog every day may tell your family's story better than any famous landmark.

Tips for a Successful Family Photo Session with Your Dog

Exercise Before the Session

A long walk beforehand can help dogs relax and settle into the experience.

Bring Treats

Treats can help redirect attention and reward good behavior throughout the session.

Pack Water

Especially during warmer months, hydration is important for both people and pets.

Don't Stress

Dogs can sense our energy.

If you're relaxed, your dog is more likely to be relaxed too.

What If My Dog Doesn't Listen?

That's completely normal.

I've photographed puppies, senior dogs, rescue dogs, nervous dogs, and dogs who have absolutely no interest in taking photos.

My approach is built around patience and flexibility.

Instead of forcing a dog into a pose, I work with their personality and behavior.

The goal isn't perfection.

The goal is creating photographs that feel like your family.

Why Family Photos with Dogs Matter

Our dogs are with us through some of life's biggest moments.

They greet us at the door.

They follow us from room to room.

They become part of our daily routines and family traditions.

Unfortunately, they never stay with us as long as we'd like.

Including them in family photographs preserves a piece of your family's story that becomes more valuable with every passing year.

As someone who recently lost a beloved dog, I understand how meaningful these photographs can become.

The images often grow more important long after the session is over.
